How to Pray

Make a Daily Plan
  • Your prayer plan starts with Quiet Time.
  • Pray. You can use a basic prayer such as the Lords prayer in Matthew 6:9-16
  • You may want to reflect on a short passage from the bible such as Psalms or Proverbs
  • End your day with an evening prayer

Faithfulness to daily prayer is important. With faithfulness to prayer, you will grow much closer to Jesus, the One who gave His life for you.

It doesn't have to be all at once. You can pray at different times, in different places during the day. It's better to spend a short time praying than to skip it altogether.

Find Some Quiet Time to Welcomes Jesus into Your Life

Quiet Time is time you set aside to talk to Jesus. You need to take this time to rediscover who Jesus is for you.

To shut out distractions, find a place where nothing will disturb you... or attend an early morning Mass at your local Catholic Church. Here the surroundings invite you to pray.

It is necessary that one should have a silent corner in which to converse with God, as if nothing else existed...
(Edith Stein)

Jesus does not say... If you pray. He says... When you pray.

He takes it for granted that prayer will be part of your life
Set aside time each day to talk to God as though you had an appointment with Him.

At first your prayer time may be only a few minutes, but aim for 20 minutes a day. Have the same time each day, then you are less likely to miss a day. With determination, it becomes a good habit.

If you miss a day, don’t be discouraged
Start again the very next day. Soon you will experience:

  • A sense of peace, an inner calm
  • A power over things that pull you down
  • A certainty that your past failures have been forgiven
  • A joy in your heart that is independent of circumstances
  • A new closeness to Jesus Christ

When you come to pray, you come to meet a person, Jesus Christ

Our deliverance from darkness and sin was bought at a great price. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, suffered and died on the Cross in order to free us from sin (Ephesians 1:7).

Although prayers or good works can never repay this great gift from God, a prayer of thanks for God’s daily care should be included in our daily conversations.
